Colorado leads best-of-7 series 3-1
WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Jets will try to stave off elimination when they play the Colorado Avalanche in Game 5 of the Western Conference First Round at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday.
The Jets have lost the past three games, getting outscored 16-5 and allowing two power-play goals in each of the past two.
"[The players] all feel good," Jets coach Rick Bowness said Tuesday. "Listen, they know our best hockey -- we haven't played it yet. They know that we need to play with more discipline, so we stay out of the penalty box. We need to score more some goals, they understand, but there's not one guy in that room ready to call it a day and call the season over.
"I'm very confident that we're going to see the A-game from everybody tonight. There's a great mood in the room. The practice was good, lots of energy, so we just hope that carries into the game tonight."
The Avalanche are trying to advance to the second round for the first time since 2022, when they went on to win the Stanley Cup. They were eliminated in seven games by the Seattle Kraken in the first round last season.
"Learning how to win sometimes can take some time," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "Experiencing heartbreak helps. I think learning from both successful series and unsuccessful ones, you kind of figure out exactly what it takes to be able to win and close out a series and survive and advance.
"We've had a pretty good mentality in our room when it comes to that, like responding after four games, keeping things going after good games all season long. We talked about things like that. They'll draw on their experience and the leadership is strong in our room. They know the importance of the game. They know we can expect Winnipeg's best game tonight. We're trying to play our best game in the series as well."

Here are 3 keys for Game 5:
1. Fix the kill
If the Jets are going to stay alive, they'll have to either stay out of the penalty box or be more effective when they are on the penalty kill. They have allowed six power-play goals on the 15 times they've been short-handed in four games (60 percent, 14th among playoff teams).
"We give up two more (in a 5-1 loss in Game 4 on Sunday) and at critical times," Jets captain Adam Lowry said. "You find a way to get the one kill near the end of a period. You go down 3-1 (in the game), it seems like a much more manageable hole to be coming out of as opposed to 4-1, so again, we'll keep looking at video, try to make some tweaks, and we'll go from there."
2. Stay the course
There has been plenty working well for the Avalanche through the first four games of the series. They're getting depth scoring (10 players with at least one goal), their power play has been outstanding and simply put, they've been playing their game at the highest level.
So, they're not looking to change much entering Game 5.
"It just goes back to staying tight as a group," Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar said. "I think for us, the main thing is going to be sticking to our game plan and hopefully having a good start. It's always tough to end a team's season and for us, it's going to be an extra tough test tonight."
3. Get to Georgiev
As much as the Jets need to cut back on what they're allowing, they also have to get their offense going. After scoring seven goals in Game 1, they've scored a combined five in the past three games. Are the chances there? Yes, but the Jets could be better at frustrating Colorado goalie Alexandar Georgiev.
"You look at the goals we've scored, like 'Gus' (Jets forward David Gustafsson's) goal here (in Game 2) was right around the net, a rebound," Bowness said. "We need to get some greasy goals. We do. We have to get in there.
"Like our goal in Game 4, yeah, it's on the rush and a great play, but you're not going to get too many of those. We need more traffic down by the net."

He never broke stride, skated to the right circle and beat goalie Connor Hellebuyck on a jaw-dropping goal at 15:03 of the second period.
“I mean, it was a little bit of a lucky one. It was kind of bobbing around the net. They got a couple sticks on it, and I was lucky enough that it hit my shin pad or my pants,” Makar said after the Avalanche’s 5-1 win against the Jets in Game 4 of the Western Conference First Round at Ball Arena on Sunday.
“Our forwards kind of pushed back their [defensemen] pretty far, so gap-wise I just tried to carry it over the line and just tried to throw it at the net. A little bit lucky.”
OK, maybe a tad lucky. But at the same time, Makar pulling off highlight-reel goals has become commonplace. His goal in Game 4 that gave the Avalanche a 3-1 lead was just the latest installment in a young NHL career full of memorable moments.
His work has helped put the Avalanche on the verge of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series and get their first chance to advance in Game 5 at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg on Tuesday (9:30 p.m. ET; CBC, TVAS, SNW, ALT, ESPN).
Makar leads the Avalanche with eight points (two goals, six assists) in four games; only Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has more (10 points; one goal, nine assists). Makar is the second defenseman in NHL history with eight points through four playoff games multiple times (also in 2022), joining Hall of Famer Bobby Orr, who did it in 1971 and 1972.
He’s been a big part of Colorado’s production, which leads the NHL in the playoffs with 5.50 goals per game. The Avalanche led the League in the regular season with 3.68 goals per game.
“I don't think many of us are surprised anymore,” Colorado defenseman Sean Walker said. “You kind of see him getting a head of steam and starting to attack guys, you know something special could happen every time. So, you’re just kind of waiting for it to happen, right?
“But I don't think there's really anyone else in the League that does it the way he does. Just such a good skater, such good hands, and then the way he can shoot the puck is with the best of them. So, it's really fun to watch.”

Makar is on a six-game point streak (three goals, eight assists) dating back to the regular season, which began when he had a goal and an assist at the Vegas Golden Knights on April 14.
The 25-year-old’s goal Sunday not only had social media buzzing but Makar’s teammates as well, even if they didn’t see it live.
“Saw it after on replay, and then I realized how good it was. And I think 'Taser' (Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews) said it yesterday, he's the best in the world,” Avalanche forward Casey Mittelstadt said. “So yeah, pretty self-explanatory.”
Makar has been a strong playoff performer since making his NHL debut with the Avalanche in the 2019 postseason, when he had six points (one goal, five assists) in 10 games. He has 73 points (18 goals, 55 assists) in 65 playoff games, and his 18 goals tie him with Sandis Ozolinsh for most in a postseason by a defenseman in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history.
“It's a blessing, really, to get to watch the best player in the League, best [defenseman] in the League go out there every night and do the things he does,” Walker said. “So, I'd like to say I wish I could bring some of that to my game, but I think it's something that some guys have, some guys don't. And he's one of the guys that’s got it.”
Makar is one of the most dynamic players in the League on a team that has its share of them. The Avalanche, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2022, are in a position to try and get back there again this season.
But they’re not getting ahead of themselves. The first step would be eliminating the Jets.
“It just goes back to the mentality of our team. I feel like we’ve been really good lately just in working well and also just staying right in the moment and not looking too far ahead,” Makar said.
“It’s the hardest game of the season when you’ve got to end a team’s year. We’ve got to go into it with the same mindset and make sure that everyone is on the same page, because obviously they’re going to give us everything they’ve got.”

MacKinnon led the Avalanche against the Stars in the regular season with seven points (three goals, four assists), and Makar had six assists. Mikko Rantanen (three goals, two assists) and Devon Toews (five assists) each had five points. Georgiev started all four games with a 3.51 GAA and .892 save percentage.
The Stars were led by Tyler Seguin, who scored six goals, and Mason Marchment and Matt Duchene, who each had one goal and four assists. Joe Pavelski had two goals, the only player other than Seguin with more than one. Jake Oettinger was 1-2-0 with a 4.74 GAA and .863 GAA and backup Scott Wedgewood allowed five goals on 34 shots in his only start Jan. 4.
Colorado and Dallas have played five times in the postseason with Dallas winning three, most recently a seven-game victory in the 2020 second round.
The Avalanche went 1-1-1 against the Golden Knights this season, winning 3-0 at home Jan. 10, but losing twice on the road, 7-0 on Nov. 4 and 4-3 in overtime April. 14.

Mayberry Fine Art and its Toronto partner, Cowley Abbot, are hosting a four-day fine arts auction preview featuring 40 Canadian and international pieces – which have an estimated value of $7,000,000 to $10,000,000.
“We decided that it would be important for Winnipeg audiences to have an opportunity to preview the live sale, and the pieces the Winnipeg Art Gallery would be offering up, giving them an opportunity to potentially participate in the sale at the end of the month,” said Shaun Mayberry, Co-owner or Mayberry Fine Art.
Fourteen of the works are from the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq’s permanent collection and are expected to go for $500,000 to $700,000 of that total.
“Some of these works are worth a few thousand dollars, some are worth in the hundreds of thousands,” said Stephen Borys, Director and CEO of WAG-Qaumajuq.
The WAG block includes an early Group of Seven painting, post-war pieces, and works by Prairie Modernists, such as Ivan Eyre and Tony Tascona.
“The painting by David Milne, I believe, is one of the higher estimated paintings that the Winnipeg Art Gallery is showcasing, which carries a pre-sale estimate of $150,000 to $250,000,” said Mayberry.
Also hitting the auction block are works from several artists with Manitoba connections, including Walter J. Phillips, L.L. Fitzgerald, Charles Comfort, Bertram Brooker, Ken Lochhead, David Milne and William Kurelek.
According to Borys, the pieces that were selected for sale by the gallery are all from artists who are well represented at the gallery.
Money raised from the auction will also help support the future of the institution.
“The funds that are raised from this sale, go towards two new acquisition funds, ones just for contemporary art, and the one we've already started for contemporary indigenous art,” said Borys.
According to Mayberry, the preview is set to provide Winnipeggers a memorable experience.
“To have this opportunity to see pieces from the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s collection, many of which have been locked away for several generations, is a pretty unique opportunity for Canadian collectors,” said Mayberry.
The preview auction begins on May 1. at Mayberry Fine Art (212 McDermot Ave) and runs through May 4.
The live auction will take place in Toronto on May 30, and will also include remote bidding.

WINNIPEG – It was a much-needed day off from the ice for the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.
Neal Pionk said it was an opportunity for a mental reset for the team.
After losing 5-1 to the Colorado Avalanche to fall behind in their opening round series 3-1, the Jets are hoping the mental reset will be the starting point of getting back on track.
Winnipeg finds itself in the exact same place as they were in a year ago, winning Game 1 and then losing three straight to face elimination in Game 5. This time though, the Jets will be on home ice and hoping to use their crowd to start chipping away at the Avs.
“Little victories and shift by shift. We can't look at the big picture right now,” said Pionk.
“We just gotta win the first period, second period, third period and go from there.”
Following the loss on Sunday, Jets head coach Rick Bowness said discipline and puck management is what cost his team Game 4. The veteran coach added that those factors will need to improve if his group is going to extend the series with a win on Tuesday.
“First and foremost, it’s got to start with each individual's intensity and battle level. When you start losing those battles on the boards or net front, you end up chasing them and we’re chasing them too much right now. It does start with that. It starts with our puck management, they’re getting way too many chances off the rush because of our turnovers,” said Bowness.
“So, those are individual mistakes that we have to clean up. Clearly, the discipline is (an issue). Taking four penalties in the second period (of Game 4) took us out of the game. We were happy with what we did at the end of the first and we did have some momentum going and then (took) back-to-back penalties and then a late one that took us right out of the game.”
The Avalanche power play has taken over as well scoring two more big goals in Game 4 and is operating at 40% so far through 240 minutes.
“Kind of the little things like blocking shots, winning puck battles, too,” said Pionk when asked about what needs to be tightened up on the PK.
“I'm sure we'll talk about some strategic things tomorrow morning but when it comes down to it, we got to work outwork their power play. They've been clicking pretty good right now.”
Winnipeg won nine straight games (eight to close out the regular season and Game 1) and now has dropped three in a row. Jets captain Adam Lowry feels this is a tight knit group and they have to believe in one another.
“We know we need to play better than we've shown the last couple of games. There've been spurts where we've played better,” said Lowry.
“You look at kind of Game 3, the first 40 minutes I thought we played a pretty solid game. But two-thirds of a game or a third of a game, that's not going to get it done against an elite team like the Avs.”
HELLEBUYCK VEZINA FINALIST
For the second straight year, Connor Hellebuyck will be a Vezina Trophy finalist along with Sergei Bobrovsky of the Panthers and the Canucks Thatcher Demko. A four-time finalist, Hellebuyck won the Vezina in 2019-20, was runner-up in 2017-18 and finished third last season.
“He’s been tremendous for us all year and I’ve said it before. I think he should be in the Hart conversation, he’s so valuable to our team. Him and (Laurent Brossoit) are the backbone of our team, so they both had tremendous years,” said Lowry.
“It’s a nice nod to Connor to be recognized for the amount of work he puts in, (and) his stellar play all year. Maybe that’s just the boost our team needs to go into Game 5 with a little optimism and a little positivity.”
VLADDY UPDATE
Vladislav Namestnikov was hit in the face with a puck in Game 4 and went to hospital for treatment. He did not travel back with the Jets on Sunday.
“He has a fractured cheekbone. There’s no orbital damage but they kept him overnight and he’s on his way back,” said Bowness.
“I sent him a text last night and he answered this morning and said he’s feeling better.”
Bowness added that Morgan Barron has yet to resume skating and Brenden Dillon is unlikely to play in Game 5.
"You know what a competitor Dilly is. We’re not going to put him in harm’s way, let’s put it that way. He’d play with two broken hands if he could, if we let him. We’ll make the right decision based on what’s best for him," said Bowness.
"We’re not going put him out there unless we’re 100% sure there can be no more damage done."
